Please read both prior to surgery
Pre-operation instructions:
For patients who are having I.V. Anesthesia
1) Do not eat or drink anything (including water) 8 hourts before your procedure. Bring your driver-escort into the waiting room at the same time as your appointment for surgery.
2) If possible, brush your teeth before you come in for your surgery to help avoid infection.
3) Please wear loose clothing with short sleeves (no one-piece suits or turtlenecks).
4) Please do not wear any necklaces, watches or contact lenses.
5)No perfume, Cologne and Scented Lotion.
6) Please remove all nail polish before you come in for the procedure.
7) have ice packs ready at home and apply them to your face as directed when you arrive homev afyer the procedure.
8) The patient must not drive or drink any alcohol or operate hazardous machinery for 18 Hours after the procedure.
Post-operation instructions
1) Do not rinse your mouth for abotu six hours after your surgery.
2) Please bite on the gauze for one hour before removing it as instructed.
3) You cannot drive or operate hazardous machinery for 18 hours after the procedure if you have intravenous anaesthesia.
4) DIET - You may have a liquid or soft diet abuot two hours after your procedure. You can eat anything that you can tolerate comfortably during the healing period.
5) SWELLING - There will be some swelling after the procedure, particularly after the wisdom teeth surgery. The swelling will usually get bigger for two to three days after the surgery. To reduce the swelling, we recommend applying ice pack to your face as instructed for three days after the procedure. It usually takes about one week to ten days for the swelling to subside completely.
6) Please keep your tongue and fingers away from the surgical area.
7) If your lips feels dry after the procedure, you can apply Vaseline. Occasionally soreness and abrasions may occur on the lip or corner of your mouth ater the procedure, you can also apply Vaseline to the area.
8) Do not drink alcohol for 18 hours after intravenous anaesthesia.
9) Do not smoke after your procedure. Try to avoid any smoking for 2 to 3 days after the procedure.
10) BLEEDING - It is normal for saliva to be tinged with blood for a few days after the surgery. It is not normal for the mouth to fill with bright red blood. To stop bleeding - first, wipe away any excess blood clot then place the gauze provided on top of the bleeding area and bit with firm pressure for one hour. Do not rinse your mouth. A wet tea bag can be used as a pack to bite on to stop the bleeding. Continous biting on the gauze or tea bag with firm pressure for an hour is necessary to control the bleeding. Repeat if necessary. Please call our office if bleeding continues.
11) MEDICATION - Take the medication as prescribed. If itchiness, redness or diarrhea appear after your have taken the medications, stop taking the medications and call our office for advice.
12) ORAL HYGIENE - Resume brushing genetly the day afer the procedure. We recommend using warm salt water as a mouth rinse (1/2 teaspoon of salt in a glass of lukewarm water). Please keep up your oral hygiene and rinse your mouth after eating.
13) Sometimes, the injection area at your arm may become tender or bruised. Avoid heavy lifting and exercise. You can apply a warm compress to the area.
14) Numbness, burning or tingling sensation of the lip, tongue, chin, teeth and gum may occur, particularly in difficult lower teeth extractions including the lower wisdom teeth. It may last six months to one your and rarely permanent.
15) Occasionally, sharp edges or bone chips may appear at the surgical area. It may resolve by itself in a few weeks. Sometimes, it is necessary to return to our office to have the bone chip removed or the sharp edges smoothed. Please call our office for advice.
16) Sometimes after the procedure, you may not be able to open your mouth fully. It may take two to three weeks for this to resolve.
17) SUTURES - The sutures placed will dissolve and come off after a few days to one week. It is perfectly fine if you happen to swallow them.
18) Please keep your appointment and return to our office for your follow up care.
